Evidential diversity and premise probability in young children’s inductive judgment1

چکیده
A familiar adage in the philosophy of science is that general hypotheses are better supported by varied evidence than by uniform evidence. Several studies suggest that young children do not respect this principle, and thus suffer from a defect in their inductive methodology. We argue that the diversity principle does not have the normative status that psychologists attribute to it, and should be replaced by a simple rule of probability. We then report an experiment designed to detect conformity to the latter rule in children’s inductive judgment. Evidential Diversity 1

Evidential diversity and premise probability in young children's inductive judgment
A familiar adage in the philosophy of science is that general hypotheses are better supported by varied evidence than by uniform evidence. متن کاملErlbaum . Diversity - Based Reasoning in Children Age 5 to 8
One of the hallmarks of inductive reasoning by adults is the diversity effect, namely that subjects draw stronger inferences from a diverse set of premise statements than from a homogenous set of premises (Osherson et al., 1990). However, past developmental work (Lopez et al., 1992; Gutheil & Gelman, 1997) has not found diversity effects with children age 9 and younger. In our own experiments, ...
متن کاملThe law of large numbers in children’s diversity-based reasoning
Adults increase the certainty of their inductive inferences by observing more diverse instances. However, most young children fail to do so. The present study tested the hypothesis that children’s sensitivity to instance diversity is determined by three variables: ability to discriminate among instances (Discrimination); an intuition that large numbers of instances increase the strength of conc...
متن کاملThinking About Music: Novice and Expert Inductive Reasoning
Recent research (e.g. López, Atran, Coley, Medin & Smith, 1997; Proffitt, Coley & Medin, 2000; Shafto & Coley, in press) has revealed striking expert-novice differences in category-based induction in the domain of folk biology. In this paper we examine the generality of those findings by investigating expert-novice differences in category-based induction in the domain of music. Experiment 1 rev...
متن کاملThe Influence of Co-Occurrence and Inheritance Information on Children's Inductive Generalization
Prior research suggests young children understand that labels serve as category markers and that they can utilize this information to perform category-based induction with both identical and semantically-similar labels (Gelman & Markman, 1986). Recent research suggests that children’s ability to perform category-based induction is limited to a small subset of semantically-similar labels which c...
